The orange belt represents the warming sun—your technique is beginning to mature and take shape. At this stage, you expand your throwing repertoire and begin to understand combination attacks and counters.

Orange belt training introduces more complex techniques including sacrifice throws and advanced groundwork. You'll learn to chain techniques together and read your opponent's reactions.

4th Kyu Requirements

Nage-waza

Throwing Techniques

  • Seoi-nage Shoulder throw
  • Tai-otoshi Body drop
  • Harai-goshi Sweeping hip throw
  • Uchi-mata Inner thigh throw
  • Ko-uchi-gari Small inner reap
  • Ko-soto-gari Small outer reap

Renraku-waza

Combination Techniques

  • O-uchi-gari → O-soto-gari
  • Ko-uchi-gari → Seoi-nage
  • O-soto-gari → O-uchi-gari
  • De-ashi-harai → Harai-goshi

Learn to flow from one technique to another. When your first attack is blocked, use your opponent's reaction to set up the second.

Sutemi-waza

Sacrifice Techniques (Introduction)

  • Tomoe-nage Circle throw
  • Yoko-gake Side hook

Sacrifice throws require giving up your standing position. They're powerful but must be executed with full commitment.

Ne-waza

Ground Techniques

  • Tate-shiho-gatame Vertical four-corner hold
  • Okuri-eri-jime Sliding collar choke

  • Escapes from holds

Key Concepts

Renzoku-waza

Continuous technique—the art of linking attacks in rapid succession. When one technique fails, immediately flow into the next. Never give your opponent time to recover.

Kaeshi-waza

Counter techniques—turning your opponent's attack against them. Learn to recognize attack patterns and respond with perfectly timed reversals.

Henka
